Moving to Forster and travelling OS again!

Moving to Forster and travelling OS again!

I found out I got a permanent position in Forster so we went and bought a townhouse. I did really well at uni so I was pretty chuffed. We sold the place we were living in for 600 grand after buying it for 260 three years ago and putting about 40 grand and a lot of work in so we were stoked. Started moving stuff up there on weekends and I was working there Mondays and Fridays and surfing there heaps. Was really busy and we were looking forward to Holidays again, going to Melbourne for Shell’s belated 40th! Did a lot of camping after not being able to for so long, and we were loving life in Forster. We spent a lot of time swimming in the river and having a beer or two some of the time, going out to some of the many restaurants available too. I was surfing heaps, before and after work so I was stoked and feeling really good. It didn’t take us long to start travelling again now that we could though, first stop was Darwin. When we got there, we checked out the city a but and had a ride along the coast on an electric scooter, too bloody hot to walk! We went up there in April, not thinking it would be too hot and the guy we rented the van from said we’d may as well drive to Uluru because a lot of Kakadu and Litchfield were still closed from the wet. We laughed and headed off to Kakadu. Our first night in the van was at Merl campground near Ubirr rocks in Kakadu. Went for a walk around rock art and an amazing view out to Arnhem Land. We then saw a croc at Cahill crossing and had a long night with the mozzies, luckily we had the screen and bats to eat them! The next day a lot of things were closed from the wet but we saw more rock art and some gorgeous scenery. We decided to head for Uluru after all! We went for a swim at Edith falls and camped at Mataranka that night. We checked out Bitter springs in the morning and then drove to a great camp and pub in Alice Springs. We then went to Kings Canyon for a quick walk as it was bloody hot and then chilled in the pool with a few beers before a beautiful sunset while laying in the van. The next day we went up to the rim walk then out to Uluṟu. We had a feed at the restaurant then went to the Olgas and the rock. Both of them were all they were cracked up to be, it was pretty bloody impressive. We got up and watched the sunrise over Uluṟu then drove to the Devils marbles. After a beautiful sunset and sunrise free camping at Devils marbles, with a stop at Daly Waters pub for lunch and Rainbow springs at Mataranka for a swim, we went to Katherine Gorge, we walked up for the stunning view of the Gorge in the morning. Then we had a great couple of days in Litchfield. Checked out and swam in waterfalls then had a few beers in Buley hole before camping near there. We then had another swim at Buley in the morning and went to Berrry springs for a look as it was closed due to the crocs. That arv we went to Greenys and had a ball. The next day we took the van back and swam and drank at the Cav hotel as our room wasn’t ready. The last day we chilled in the room a bit then went out for a couple of drinks and a feed. Did plenty of surfing through the term, and some camping and then before we knew it we were off to Bali for the mid year holiday. Had fun surfs at airports then went out to Sanur and went to the dentist. Got a bike and board the first day then went out Kuta beach. Had a night at Tanjung Benoa and had a grovel at what I think is Sri Lanka. Too windy at Sanur so went surfing at Middles and airport lefts again. Had plenty of beers there and a nice walk along the beach. Went back to Kuta for a night to see KJ and had a big night with her. Then she came down to Ulu’s and we went out for a few and a feed. Had another two surfs the second day at Ulus then went out when it was pretty big and got washed down past the cave and had to drift down to Thomas beach. Went back to Sanur and watched Origin after round two at the dentist. Surfed Airports again then went out with Kara in Sanur. Went and saw her at Canggu the next day and had a fun surf near there. Went out for our last night in Kuta, which was another big one and then had my last surf at Kuta reef before heading home. Had such a great time, stoked to be travelling OS again! Came back and once again surfed heaps, camped plenty and flew up for a weekend in QLD for Aurora’s birthday. We also built a pergola out the back which looked schmicko, but was a bloody hassle because we didn’t ask body corporate and one pain in the butt was digging her heals in. Reminded us why we didn’t like living in units anymore!

Had our first holiday in New Zealand and it was mind blowing! We enjoyed Christchurch, with an old tram city tour to get us around and a hop off at the market with craft beer, local wine and local artisan food. Needless to say, we hopped back on for the rest of the trip and then headed back to the market to sample the goods, a couple of hours later we found an Irish pub for some Guinness and Kilkenny pint size nightcaps. The first night in the van we free camped on the beach at Kaikoura. We went and watched some seals on the rocks and are sitting in the van now, drinking some beer and wine while the lambs on the hill behind us baa to their mums. Sat in the sun for a while before that, soaking up the last bit of warmth after a walk along the beach. We had a stunning drive up the coast, through incredibly green farmland surrounded by snowy mountains and featuring cosy little historic towns. We then got back to the coast to drive along watching seals jump through the waves and again look up to see snowy mountains looking over the whole show. We were floored already by what we’d seen in just a day. Didn’t score any waves in Kaikoura but the drive across to the west coast was incredible. More fantastically green farmland, crystal clear waterways, snowy mountains, cute little historic towns and speaking of cute, spring lambs living their best life. Frolicking, wagging their little tails while drinking milk from mum and blissed out smiles, closed eyes at the sun while sitting down eating that greener than green grass. We had a swim in one of those streams by the side of the road and of course, it was freezing so we warmed up back in the van. We then got to Westport and headed down one of the top ten drives of the world down the west coast road toward Greymouth. It didn’t disappoint, though either of the last two days hadn’t either. We stopped many, many times for photos and got out for a walk at the pancake rocks. It really is the Wild West over here, the Tasman smashes up against mountainous cliffs and along rugged beaches, mostly deserted apart from a few picture postcard old fishing shacks cowering in the dunes from the roaring forties that howl across the face of the huge waves. Found a spot along the road that if someone else was as stupid as me to go out, I would have but even the shark magnet might not have kept me safe this time. We got to Greymouth and had another free camp on the beach. It was pretty cool to watch the sun go down out the back of our van over some almost waves while having a feed and some drinks. That was all just on the second day! Found some almost waves again in the morning but was another case of not wanting to risk it alone for the lack of inspiration. What was inspiring us was the day ahead! We headed down another gorgeous coast road toward the glaciers, different scenery again from shrubby, arid coastal bush land to rainforested mountains with glacial rivers running alongside the road. We got out for a walk at Franz Josef glacier and while there was no ice, it was spectacular. The sheer volume of the place and everywhere in this country makes you realise how small and insignificant you are. While getting philosophical, being here in spring really warms the heart too. Each day brings a fresh fix of lamb love and there are calves, bambi and a plethora of bird life to go with it. We camped that night in Haast pass, paid 20 bucks this time but that was fine. It was getting a bit dark and it was a picturesque spot in the rainforest with one of those glass like streams running by. The next day we had another world class drive to Queenstown. Snowy mountains and lakes were the canvas this time. If a map tells you 1 hour, make it at least 2. That’s because of all the stopping for walks and photos though so it’s a great thing. We stopped at Wanaka for coffee and a pie, which is quite a treat here. It is a gorgeous little town on a lake surrounded by those snowy mountains we’d driven around. We stayed in a backpackers in Queenstown for some warm water and flash grub. We ended up in an ice bar which was really cool, pun intended. We had breaky there in the morning for one last look at the remarkables and the vivid blue lake that the ski resort town is perched on. Another terrific drive took us to Milford sound. We stopped many times again for photos, in particular the mirror lake which was exceptional on this sunny and cloudy day, as was the stop in Gertrude valley with the cheeky Kea trying to fly into our van then posing for photos on the don’t feed the Kea sign with the snowy mountain backdrop. We had to go through those mountains in a tunnel which was cool but a bit freaky at the same time. Once there we had some arvo beers overlooking another beautiful mountain river. The next day was our Fiordland cruise, it was jaw-dropping. Rainbows in waterfalls, dolphins, penguins, seals and that mass of Tasman again. On the walk back we took the little waterfront walk and were rewarded with the songs and up close encounters of Tui and other native birds. That afternoon we went for a walk through the forest and along that creek and then I had a swim in it which was to say the least, invigorating. We left the next day with another incredible drive along the coast and stayed at Colac bay. We had a stunning view while we ate lunch on a cliff overlooking the wild Tasman at Orepuki and a detour to look out on the even wilder Southern ocean and battered old fishing shacks huddled up into the rocks in cosy nook. I had a surf at Colac bay which was OK and bloody cold! We had a few beers and a delicious feed at the pub which the campground we stayed in was attached to last night. This morning the surf was blown out so we had another terrific drive through picturesque farmland and coasts, with some cute little fishing towns such as Riverton and from Taieri mouth to here. We found an Irish pub here and are staying in a backpacker again for a bit of luxury after a life changing first week in this novel worthy country! We then got to Dunedin! We were amazed after one day in that country, it had been about a week and each day had gotten more and more beautiful. Had a surf at St Clair in Dunedin which was OK and then headed up the coast again through more beautiful farmland and our daily land fix and stopped for a look around Oamaru. There is a cool steak punk vibe in that town, historic shopfronts and warehouses along the waterfront are filled with art, sculptures and people dressed in their weird and wacky outfits. We continued on to Timaru and had a free camp at Patiti point, there were no waves but it was a nice place to have a quiet one in the van. Got up the next day and saw that there were still no waves so we headed up the coast and back towards the snowy mountains of the Banks peninsula. That place is spectacular. From shrubby coastal farmland to mountains with lambs playing in the ice and snow that spills onto the windy little roads we sheepishly drove along. We then got to Arakoa and the sun came out and really lit up the beauty on the volcanic crater with its brilliant blue water to vivid green pastures to snowy mountains looking over the whole show. We parked the van at our campsite that overlooked this mesmerising view and then headed into town to check out the feedback inspired architecture and a couple of their local beverages. It quickly turned black and we headed back up the hill before the rain really opened up. The next day we woke to the snow falling on the van and giving us yet another perspective on this incredible place , the crater was now shrouded in cloud, mist and fog and the green grass was covered with a blanket of white. We hung around for the morning as the people at the park told us we were snowed in but after talking to locals at lunch who insisted it was fine we decided to head out towards Christchurch. It was a bit scary with more snow and ice on the road but I took it easy and we got to Lyttelton and got a room in town. We went to a cool old pub and a brewery and then had a pretty quiet one. We had another stunning drive the next day and along the way we got lucky enough to see a seal right on the side of the road on the rocks on the beach. We checked it out for a while then checked the surf but it was too small. There was a cool rock called cave rock on the beach that I walked around for a bit. We packed the van up then took it back and went to our airport hotel. We had some drinks that afternoon, talking about the amazing things we’d seen and done on this holiday. We plan to come back and do the north island as we’d had so much fun on the south. Went back to surfing heaps again and doing the kitchen in our unit because a beautful house turned up, thankfully we got the pergola approved just in time! Great spot with views of the ocean and the lake for 180 degrees, double garage, unit downstairs we can rent out, 3 bathrooms and a fireplace! We got the house and sold the unit. With the money we made from the Woodberry house, that huge price was cut in half and renting the unit out paid for most of the mortgage. We then went to the South Pacific over Christmas and the new year!

A new house and more travelling

We started in Korolevu, Fiji, had sick waves the first full day but then it’s been flat the last coupla days. Went on the bus into town the second day then just hung at the hotel yesterday for Christmas and had a nice walk along the beach. We then headed to our new luxury hotel at Korotogo. Snorkelled and saw plenty of colourful fish and coral. The place we stayed there was great and had a yum Indian restaurant downstairs so we went through most of their menu. We then went to Olosara. Had sick waves at Sigatoka, airs and barrels all to myself. Had fun waves at Hideaway too for a couple of days. Had a fun new years there and woke up to see some of the fireworks then went back to sleep. Headed back to Nadi then off to Samoa! In Samoa we stayed in a Fale on the beach in Tafatafa. Surfied fun rights with two other blokes right out the front of the Fale. Went to a beautiful double waterfall that we could get behind the fall and jump off the rocks. We then went to the So Tua ocean trench which was stunning too. The coastline here is spectacular. We've had some great snorkels here and a nice one at Apia to before coming to the South side of the island. We’re loving it here but the surf has dropped off so we’re heading to Falepuna tomorrow. There could be waves there but it’s also time for some luxury after roughing it in the cape for a few days. Had a great time in Falepuna, had a swim in the cave pool which was beautiful and went for a bus ride along the stunning  coast looking for an island to snorkel at but decided to just snorkel in front of the hotel which was amazing. Cuttlefish, turtles, a tiny, cute little eel, bright and colourful range of hard coral and lots of fish I’d never seen before. I came back and took Shell out on a kayak but it had a hole in it and after we’d paddled out about half a k, it sank. We couldn’t paddle it back so we had to swim and I towed the kayak which felt like it weighed a ton. We told some locals who’d watched us go about the hole and they laughed and said ‘they all have holes!’ After that we had a couple of nights in Apia, ate some great food and drank some good wine (which is hard to come by here) and Shell did some shopping. We then went into the mountains at a hotel with a magnificent view over Apia and the gorgeous coastline. We swam in the waterfall on the property and went to the sliding rocks which were closed unfortunately. Had a nice feed and a few beers tonight back in Nadi before heading to Tonga! Had a great time there. Hired a car for a couple of days, went looking for waves the first day but no go. Went and checked out the blowholes though which was cool. The next day we went looking for the fishing pigs but didn’t catch them in the water. Went to the Tongan Stonehenge and an awesome cave and I had a snorkel at the beach in front of the cave too. Unfortunately there are no island trips going after the Tsunami, a lot of the island has been smashed by it and it seems like it will take a long time to rebuild. We had a great, relaxing holiday but it was back to reality. We moved straight into our new house when we got back and started buying and filling it with eccentric furniture that Shell had dug up. I fit in a heap of surfing and we did some camping along the way. The first holiday of the year was down south. We left on Thursday and stayed at Karuah, had a beer under the moonlight shining on the river, then a few more at the bowlo and a feed, was just great to get on the road after work. Free camped in Berry the next night after a fun surf at Werri then some beers, music and food at the pubs and some wine back in the van. Went to Milton the next day and had a fun surf at Mollymook then went to the Wombat Brewery with Rhonda and Demelza. Stayed at Ray and Jacqui’s and had a nice dinner and more drinks. Spent Easter there too and did more of the same after going into Milton for some supplies. Ray was sick but doing really well so that was great to see. We then went to Congo campground, had a few beers on the beach in the arv then a feed of huge Berry steaks and some wine. Had a fun surf at Kioloa today after leaving Milton. Surfed in the morning but it was pretty fat and a lot of water moving around a long way out in the ocean by myself. Went to Bermagui after that with a stop at Tilba for a beer and a look around. Had a great spot with ocean views and a feed at the pub. We then went to Pambula after a fun surf at Merimbula bar. Went to the brewery for a few and then back to the park for some more amd wine. We then decided to go to Jindabyne! It is stunning. We just walked around and went to the pub the first night. We then had a walk around the lake and drive out to Thredbo river which is jaw dropping. We then went to the brewery and a great Japanese restaurant for dinner. We wanted to climb Kosciusko but high winds could shut the lifts and drop the temp up high to zero or less so we will be back with more time to check it all out more. We left and decided to stay in Cooma for the National Busking Championship. It was fun and then we had a fire at our camp. We started back for Ulladulla but had to backtrack and take the low road because the weather on the one we were on was getting pretty nuts and we were in the middle of nowhere if something went wrong. Had a nice drive though. We’re a bit sad for a number of reasons today but looking forward to getting back on the road tomorrrow and going to the awesome camp spot on the beach waiting for us in Coledale. We went back to Milton and stayed at Ray and Jacqui’s. Had sick waves at Bogeys then the point today and it was pretty solid. We went and saw Joy then to the winery after breaky with Col and Rhonda. Had a great time camping at Coledale, our camp was right on the beach and there were sick waves! Surfed in the arvo the day we got there and got barreled. Then surfed the next day and had sick ones too, pretty solid and sucky both times. Hung at the camp the first night then went for a drive into Wonoona and the brew shop the next day. Went to the bowlo then into Thirroul for an awesome feed the next night. Through the night though, our gazebo got bent out of shape and buggered by the wind which wasn’t even that strong and everything got soaked in the rain. We decided to bail on the camp that night and go to a hotel in the gong. We had a great time at 2 breweries and a yum feed at an Italian restaurant. We left the next day for the Entrance and used our new gazebo we bought in the gong at our new camp site right on the waterfront. We hung at the camp the first night and looked for waves the next day but struck out. We went out for Mexican that night and met up with Beth and Shannon. We had a fantastic time away and went back off to Sydney the next weekend for a comedy show! Had another Sydney weekend of comedy and the zoo this time. Did plenty of surfing and went up home to see the family. We then headed off to Vietnam!

Had a few in Hanoi for my birthday but we were still knackered from long night flights over there. Not too knackered to sample some of the amazing street food and 60c beer hoi! We then went to Sapa! Got there on a sleeper bus, great way to travel! It’s beautiful up there and a bit cooler in the mountains. Had a great time in Sapa, went for a ride through the picturesque terraced villages and past waterfalls and spectacular mountain vistas. Went from Sapa to Halong bay on another sleeper bus. Spent the afternoon in our hotel’s horizon pool overlooking the city coming to life with lights as the sun went down then went into the city for a feed and some drinks. Got on our cruise ship the next day, which was amazing. Our room was better than we could have hoped (apart from the spa jets not working, so we were upgraded to the presidential suite!). The food was fantastic, and there was always so much of it! Goes without saying that the views were phenomenal and we did some cool things like kayaking, swimming and caving. Got off the boat after two great nights and went back to Hanoi. Went to see ‘train street’ which was really fun. It’s barricaded off by police but locals ‘sneak’ you in through their house as long as you buy something such as a $2 beer to watch the train hurdle past you metres from where you are sitting. The next day we flew to Da nang and got straight on the bike and headed to the marble mountains. The views were beautiful and there were shrines and statues around and a cave to climb through. We had dinner and watched the dragon bridge breathe fire and water that night. We then rode up Hai van pass which had some more breathtaking views and breaky up top before heading to Hoi An. Got there by riding from Da nang. Had a $30 feed of lobster on the river and had a few drinks watching the lanterns on the islands and in the boats light up as the sun went down. It really is a beautiful spot. Had a chilled out first full day there. Went out for a yum breaky and then had a swim in our pool. Organised a dive for the next day and then went out for some more great food and drinks. The dive was amazing. We saw heaps of nudibranchs, lots of different colourful coral and plenty of fish. We then went out for another great night. The next day we went for a bit of a ride around sightseeing. We rode back to Da nang Friday and went for drinks on the beach and dinner on the street and saw a cool band and that was our last night of another great holiday in Vetnam! Had another great term of surfing and camping. Started staying Sunday nights and getting up early for a quick surf then going to work which made it almost like a long weekend! Before long we were getting on the plane to the North Island of New Zealand! Had a ball in Auckland. Went to a couple of cool pubs the first night then went for a stroll around for late breaky/early lunch the next day and found a gourmet buffet with plenty of beers, wine and cocktails and continued that at a few other places all afternoon and onto midnight! We free camped at Ocean beach near Whagarei on our first night in the van in NZ! Had a beautiful drive up the coast and got there in the arv for a few beers and wine with dinner. The drive from there to the Bay of Islands was magnificent. We stayed at Russel the second night and had a few beers in town then wine back in the van. Had another picturesque drive the next day after crossing over to Paihia and with a stop at Waipu cove where I had a few fun little waves and Shell had a sleep. Had a feed at Murphy’s law Irish pub just south of Auckland at Drury and crashed in the car. Drove to Raglan the next day and had a bloody terrible onshore surf there. Stayed that night in Raglan and had a few drinks in town then wines back at the van, a good pattern happening here. The surf was just as bad the next day so we decided to head across to the south east coast where it wasn’t forecast to be onshore the rest of the time. Stumbled across the free camp in Rotorua and went for a walk to Kuirau park to check out the geothermal pools, rocks and mud pools. The foot baths were out of action but that’s cool, it was bizarre to see the otherworldly landscape. We were on our way back to the van and a few pubs jumped out at us so we obliged and had some yum food too. The next day we went swimming at Kerosene creek geothermal hot stream which was beautiful with its little waterfall and the warm water really seemed to cleanse us. We then went to a geothermal park outside Taupo which was cool with the steam vents and mud pools. We also checked out the spectacular icy blue and white Huku falls. We then did another mountainous drive to Napier and checked out their cool art deco architecture before heading out to our cabin at Waipatikiri beach where we had a coupla nights of luxury in a cabin and a day out of the van. Had a few fun waves in the morning yesterday then went for a walk around the spectacular, secluded valley which opened up to the stunning, isolated beach. Was great to just laze around in the sun and look at the beauty out the window of the cabin that looked straight down at the beach. On the drive back up the Island we dipped our feet in another geothermal hot stream and checked out a mud pool. We then went back to the free camp in Rotorua and to some more of those great pubs we keep falling into and found some more yum food. Once again, we were floored by the beauty of this place and loving it! After Rotorua we went to the Bay of plenty and looked for waves, should have went out at the first place with people out but it was a bit small. Had a spectacular drive up and down the coast though. Free camped at Ōhope beach, which was beautiful. Even got Indian delivered to the van! Climbed up Mt Maunganui the next day and the view from the top was incredible. Free camped in Tauranga that night and went out for dinner and drinks. The next day we walked around Karangahake gorge and checked out all the old mine ruins. The drive from there through the lower Coromandel was stunning. We camped that night at Hot water beach and dug a natural spa at the beach then in it with beers while the sun went down. The next morning I had a fun little surf there and then we headed to Coromandel town for our last night in the van, free camped on a little stream right in town. Did a pub crawl and had a nice dinner. Had a swim in the stream Saturday morning and then our last picturesque drive down the western side of the Coromandel. To say which Island was better would be hard, as would picking a favourite from either, needless to say we had another fantastic holiday in New Zealand! Had more great waves and camping through the term. Had a romantic camping getaway for Shell’s birthday and a family (just before) Christmas and mum and dad’s 45th anniversary get together back home.

20 years and what a way to celebrate!

Then we started our incredible 20th Anniversary in Vegas and month in Mexico 20th honeymoon! Landed in LA on Saturday and drove to Palm Springs that night through the desert in our luxury black Infinity that goes like clappers! Had a yum Tuscan dinner and a few drinks then crashed out tired as. The drive through the desert was spectacular and we checked out Route 66 and had lunch at a cool 50’s diner. Checked into our first hotel, The Strat and saw a funny show after a couple of bars and a win on blackjack. Went out the next day about lunchtime after a loss on blackjack that time. We then had a suite at the Linq hotel and it was pimping. We got married by Elvis! I dressed up as him too and Shell was Marilyn Monroe. We had a ball and are looking forward to another fun 20 year together and then some! Had some huge nights in Vegas, had Tapas and cocktails one night then went on to bars until the early hours. We then flew to San Diego and had a great time there too. Went out in the Gaslamp quarter and had some drinks then found free comedy so had more drinks and laughs. Got my board the next day on a stop from the trolley on the way to the border. We then crossed over and had a blast in Tijuana! Went out the first night to breweries and pubs then a nice feed of tacos and huge margaritas. Got the car the next day and went looking for waves at Baja Malibu but struck out. Had a huge night of dancing, drinking, Shell got a tat and other shenanigans until the early hours. We went to Rosario the next day and hoped to get waves! We then went to Valle de Guadelupe for Christmas! Went to a beautiful winery and had a yum steak after a stunning drive through the desert and mountains from Tijuana. Went to more wineries the next and enjoyed their wines with gourmet food afterwards around the fire at our cute little hotel. After Valle de Guadalupe we had a spectacular drive over the mountains to K38, about 10k’s out of Rosario. I had a couple of surfs, the morning one was the best. It was pretty solid, long and fun waves when I could get on them. A lot of paddling and getting wide, fat ones on the head every now and then though. We had a quiet one there after a big last night in the Valle with some yanks, wine and Mezcalito. We went into Rosarito for a look but it was pretty hectic and just a long, straight beach so we were happy for low key. We then headed to Ensenada, took the car back and had another huge night. We got on the night bus to Santa Rosalia at about 9, supposed to be 8 (Mexican time). Shell slept OK and I did too, a combination of being a bit fluey, hung over and I necked a coupla sleeping pills. We got to Santa Rosalia about 10 I think’ it was all a bit blurry and the time changed along the way. Had a proper sleep for a while then went out but all the street food stalls were closed, spewing! We had a couple of beers and a good feed and some more good sleep. It was a cute little old mining town on the Sea of Cortez, nice for an overnight stop. We got up early the next day for the bus ride to La Paz! Had a great night last night, plenty of beer and margaritas and we saw in the new year on the beach with some drunken American sailors! We got there after another long bus ride along the beautiful coast lined with cacti and vultures. It’d been a great year again! Travel OS was well and truly back in full swing and we were loving it. I got the job in senior land so I’d be much happier at work! We’ve had tenants in our new place downstairs so it’s looking after itself and we love living there. It's been really nice to enjoy where we live and not do too much work around our house. We were looking forward to another great year, the Africa trip for starters was going to be amazing. But we hadn’t finished this one yet and of course, Mexico delivers every time! We did a whale shark snorkel which was incredible! We got so close and they aren’t phased by us at all, they are just so chilled out and graceful. We stayed another night in La Paz after the snorkel and had a few drinks that night. The next day, we hired a car and drove down the coast! We only got as far as Todos Santos (about an hour) because it was a cool town and we had plenty of time. We had a walk around, found somewhere to stay and then had a beer on the deck of a great restaurant at sunset watching whales mucking about in the distance. We then went and had some more drinks down the street until the early hours. We headed further south the next day towards San Lucas, looking for waves on the way. Struck out that day, so we kept going to San Lucas, had a look around and found a great hotel. We went into town, got some diet pills, downed one and then went to a brewery and a few other bars, again into the early hours. The next day we headed back up the coast and stumbled across Gas point and I had sick waves. We had a quieter night that night and the next day we went back to Gas point and it was even better. We had another big night, this time mostly in our room with some beer, wine and tequila. We then tried in town at Monuments and I got fun waves, also kicked an urchin after diving under right at the start of the surf. Still trying to get them all out! That night we had a quiet one again and then got up this morning and checked out to head to San Jose. It was great to have the freedom a car brings again, had some sick waves and some spectacular drives down the coast. Had a fun surf on the way to San Jose at Monuments. Had a walk around and got some supplies (grog) and then checked into our hotel. Had a beer at a tap room but it was windy and cold so we came back here and had a few more beers and some wine with yum cheese, meat and olives. Got no waves in San Jose so we just had a look around at some beaches and the Estuary. It was still a bit of a big hotel town so after a big night out and then a few more at the room into the early hours we headed back up the coast toward Todos Santos. Had a fun surf at Gas point again, solo for a while. Shell and I then went for a walk around the point looking to get closer to the whales that were going off out the back. We didn’t get lucky with them but we did get closer to the rock island just off shore with sea lions lazing about and swimming around. We had a look around at Cerritos but ended up back at Todos Santos that night. Had a few drinks then a pretty quiet night. Went back to Cerritos looking for waves the next day but it was small and packed. Had another look at Pedrito but it was no good either so we just lazed around Todos Santos before having beers at the brewery, great food and wine at the wine bar and then all sorts into the early hours with music at the bar we spent lots of time at in our first visit to Todos Santos. We drove back to La Paz the next day and had a quiet one there. Cooked some yum steaks and veges with some beers and wine. We then drove up to San Carlos and saw Gray whales up close, heaps of bird life and some dolphins. After the whale trip we had another quiet night of a few beers, I had another great lobster feed and Shell had steak. We had a pretty big one for our last night in La Paz with some tequila shots and margies but made sure to crash pretty early to get up and drive to the airport to get up and drop the car off before getting on a plane to Cozumel for diving and snorkeling! We had a great time in Cozumel. Watched a great band and had plenty of drinks and seafood the first night. It rained all the next day so we just had a lazy day and sorted out a dive before some more drinks that night. The dives were spectacular! The first one was an easy drift dive with plenty of such and hard coral. The second was a fantastic wreck dive, we went right inside and through the ship and there were plenty of fish inside and out. We had another fun night out and the next day got a scooter and rode around the island. We had a fun snorkel at a cafe, bought a coffee to access their beach and drifted down watching the fish and coral to the next beach club, got out and used their shower and then walked back along the road to the cafe. We then rode to the top of the island for lunch at a little cabana right on the beach. We kept going along the other side slowly, watching and stopping to take in the azure blues of that untouched coastline. We had a beer at a cool bar on a cliff overlooking the ocean and then headed back through the island for another snorkel at the other end of town. We jumped in at a free beach and drifted down again, over heaps of sting rays and a rock and coral wall teeming with fish to an old abandoned mansion on the beach where we got out to walk back along the road to the bike. It was a great way to spend the sunniest day we had on the island! The next day we took a pretty wild ferry ride (which was made all better with beer) to Playa del Carmen. We found more beers and a hotel, and then went out for more beers before we could check in. That night we went out to a few places and ended up at an amazing local place until the early hours with great music from about 30 people playing various horns, drums and strings. We had a lazy next day and then went and did it all again until the early hours at breweries, bars and a place with a crazy Mexican metal head singing and playing drums. We then went to Cancun, our last night in Mexico before flying home. We had a nice arvo feed then a quiet, late night dinner of yum sushi. We were sad to be leaving, it’s been a fun filled month here in Mexico and before that in Vegas. I’m sure we’ll be back though!

When we got back home we stayed at a pub in Woy Woy when we got off the plane and had a few with a nice dinner. Came back and had a great Oz day at One Mile with a barbie and mates. Had some fun little waves at North one and Tunners and did some gardening and stuff over the weekend and then mum and dad came for a visit and we walked down to Bella for dinner. Went to Newy and stayed at the Sydney junction, had plenty of good beer and great Italian.

Had a fun surf at Terence then camped at Old bar but didn’t surf because there was a shark around and no one out. Went camping at Bretti reserve Friday night and swam in the creek which was great after a hot day and then it cooled down enough for a fire. Camped at Manning river in Barrington tops which was beautiful. Swam in the river and had another fire because it got pretty cold! Camped at Karuah Friday night then got some tiles for the kitchen Saturday morning from Maitland. Went to Manly and did a pub/brewery/wine bar crawl. Picked up an oven at Manly, Reindeer fur at Newport, another Slipstream board at Oyster bay and then windows in Newcastle. We then went to the Northern star for St Patties day and then out for yum Italian. Stayed at the Sydney Junction Sunday night and got up at 5:00 to drive to work this morning! Had a great weekend at Mudgee! Stayed at Karuah Thursday night but the van shat itself Friday morning so we had to come home with it in a tow truck then get in the little car and take the tent. Went to a brewery, Irish pub and wine bar that night. Went to beautiful wineries, another brewery, back to the Irish pub then another pub the next day-night. Stayed at an Irish pub in Maitland Sunday night and had a few then got home today and had a few after unpacking. Had a fantastic time up there, it is stunning. Went to Newy to get a library for the spare room then had a few here. Still waiting for the van, that will decide what we’re doing in the holidays at the end of this week! We’ve started the kitchen Reno, Shell found a cheap second hand tent that’s much better so we’re having a night in it on Wednesday at Bulls. Went to see mum and dad and nan and pa, then Armidale and Dungog. Renovated our kitchen and it’s great. Had a great time camping at Racecourse! Went up Friday and little waves Saturday and a fire to keep us warm. Shell hurt her back again Saturday so we headed straight home on Sunday and had a movie arvo in front of the fire which was nice. Had a great long weekend in Yamba! Drove up Friday night and went straight out to the brewery. Went out for yum breaky Saturday then to another brewery and then out to Mexican for dinner. Went to Maclean Sunday then to the Harwood pub then the pub in Yamba and then back to the brewery. No waves but had a fun time and had plenty of waves through the week at Elim. Stayed at Port Mac Sunday night, had a tiny surf in the arv but was too small. Have to fix the G&S, big hole in the deck. Had a fun week in Sydney and weekend in Newy! Had some tiny waves Saturday at Newy beach on the latest Slipstream for the shed. Had plenty of beers and wine and good food. We both got bloody Covid though, Shell still had to go to work but I was off the whole week, no surf on my birthday! Had a couple of drinks though. Went to the Philippines and started in Manila and just had a quiet one because Shell was crook again. Had a coupla wine cans and sleeping pills on the flight and slept a few hours. Went to Boracay and went on an ‘island hopping’ tour that was mostly just around the island then to another for a swim and beers. Had a snorkel in pretty deep water with some coral and plenty of fish. Got back to our rooms and a much appreciated shower and some air con while we booked our flights to El Nido! The first day we just had a swim, booked our island hopping tour for the next day and then had a few beers and margs at a Mexican joint then some yummy Japanese food. The island hopping was great! Plenty of great snorkelling, kayaking and a couple of beers on the way back. That arvo we had a few more beers, margs and tacos and a bit more of a quiet one. The next day we headed to Coron. Had a luxury hotel in the mountains with a beautiful view so we just hung there the first day and had a few beers, wines and what seemed like a good feed there. Through the night and most of the next day I had the stomach bug so we didn’t venture far, the chilled day Shell had been wanting but not this way. By the arvo I was OK so we booked a dive for the next day. We then went to look around and have a few beers at a fantastic brewery and wines and cheese at a yum French place. The dives were amazing! The first was in a fresh/saltwater lake. The Thermocline between was so vivid that we could see it like a sheet of glass and go below to 36 degrees, through the murky soup and above to 24 degrees. Seeing the sea snake and playing with the catfish was pretty cool too. The second dive was spectacular, some of the most vibrant, diverse and active corals we’ve seen. Also saw a turtle, nudibranchs, another sea snake and plenty of fish. That afternoon we got some scrumptious lechon and went back to the brewery for beers and French place for more wine and cheese. The next day we left but unfortunately Shell now had the bug and it wasn’t a great day for her. We got to Cebu, she slept and I went and got my teeth done and organised the bike for today. Up for a snorkel in the sardine bait balls tomorrow in Moalboal! Rode here from Cebu city today, was pretty hectic in the city but nice and cooler up through the mountains through the jungle crossing one coast to the other. Had a couple of beers and a quiet one the first night, Shell’s just gotten over the same stomach bug I had for a day or so. We went snorkeling with the sardine bait balls and it was amazing. They were huge and it was really cool swimming through them and they swirl and move all around you. We then went to Kalawan falls and had a swim, which was beautiful. Went and watched a band and had some more drinks. The next day Shell went to the dentist and then I had a couple of spectacular snorkels. Saw turtles, pipe fish and more bait balls. Went to a French place and had great cheese and wine. Went to watch origin that night then had a couple of beers and dinner. Rode back to Cebu city the next day. Went for a few drinks that night and then went to Manila the next day. Was a pretty bloody long day/night. Flight was delayed and we couldn’t get through to the lounge we’d planned to go to so I had a few beers. Camped at The Entrance Saturday night and had a nice feed and a few drinks. Camped at Swans crossing Saturday which was beautiful. Picked up our awesome record player radiogram for Port Mac then stayed at Laurieton pub on Saturday night. Had a great weekend camping, we were on our way to Hungry gate but it was raining so we went to Bello for some beers at the pub then Bruno’s and crashed in the car park in town. We went to Hungry gate Saturday and I had a swim and a read on the grass while Shell did uni work. Had a few drinks in the sand dunes overlooking the whales in the ocean. We then had a fire and cooked a nice dinner on it. I had fun little waves in the morning then we headed to North Haven and I had another fun little surf while Shell finished her assignment. Had drinks on the beach then the clubhouse watching more whales then drinks and dinner back at the caravan park. Had fun little waves in the morning there before driving to work. Went camping at Dee’s corner Friday night in front of the fire then went to Jay’s 50th at Norah head Saturday. Had a great weekend with mum and dad for his birthday and Father’s Day. Had dinner at Dragons den with them Friday night and put the ceiling in the carport with him on Saturday.

Our first houses, new job, new uni degree and more new countries!

Our first house, new job, new uni degree and more new countries!

So when we got home we did some painting on the unit as the contract to sell it would take a coupla weeks. We were checking out heaps of houses and I was doing plenty of surfing. Went camping at North Haven with mum and Dad, got some fun waves at Crowdy head ones on Sunday at Saltwater. Stayed at Kew at a rest area on Friday night then went out for dinner with them at the club on Saturday. Had an awesome time at Cog and stayed in a nice pub and then went and had a feed at the markets after I surfed. We accepted an offer in our place and we’re pretty excited, looking at heaps of places while we wait for it all to go through. Download was sick! Slayer went off as always and Behemoth was awesome too. Was some other good bands and the next morning I had some fun waves at MacMasters beach. Had a few jams with Anoxikk which was great! Made on offer on Greenway which was sick! Shell went to see Roxanne and Aurora. Went for a drive to Tocal with Shell Saturday morning before she went to the Wine machine gig. Went home for a weekend and got sick waves at Darkum Saturday twice and a few Sunday. Camped at Darkum headland Friday night, looked at a house in Sandy on Saturday morning, visited the Tarrants and then had lunch with nan and pa.  Emperor went off! They played some other sick songs as well as Anthems.

We loved it in China! Went to Daming Lake and Black Tiger Spring in Jinan on the bullet train at over 300 K’s an hour. Then our luxury hotel room after a great feed and a few beers. Climbed the spectacular Great Wall and then had a nice dinner and a bath for our last night in Beijing. Went to the Forbidden city and Tiananmen Square the first full day by ourselves and then went to the street market and I ate a spider and snake after a few beers. On our first day we went to the temple of heaven for a while then crashed early as we were buggered after the flight. Had a day to ourselves, enjoyed our amazing hotel and had a bit of a look around. Cruised along the Yangtze River! Had a few beers in the sun in the arvo on Cliff’s deck looking at the amazing view and swapped a beer for some oranges with a little smiley local fella in a boat. Went up Shenmong stream which was lovely. Shell was crook so I went on the Tribe of the three gorges tour myself, it was so beautiful. Brilliant colours in the trees and water and the mist lingering around the mountains topped it all off. We went to a museum and I went up a big building for a view of Shanghai, Michelle was a bit scared. We then went on a night cruise and looked at all the lights which was pretty cool. Went to the Master of nets garden and walked along the Grand canal in Suzhou which were stunning. Went to a gorgeous garden in Hangzhou. We went for a walk up Mount Tai and had another great view. Just chilled our last day on the boat and the next day we checked out the city of Chongqing which was lovely. We had a great time and the hotels have all been really flash. Then we went back to start moving into our first house! Moved all our stuff in on Friday and had a few beers that arv and a relax in our new bath! I had a surf on Saturday morning at Nobbys and then we unpacked our stuff and got the last of our stuff from Skilton then had a few beers again. Unpacked again on Sunday and then we went out to the Bero Bowlo for dinner. We were a bit sad to say goodbye to the little unit we made look so nice but this place is great and so far we love the quiet and the views out the back. Took rubbish to the dump and put the antenna up amongst other things like cut some wood with the chainsaw. Got the garden looking pretty nice and some things. Cut down a heap of trees to get a better view out the back yesty. Was surfing about 3 times a week and jamming a bit too. Went to The Newy Comedy fest and stayed at a hotel in Newy and had a great night. Karnivool was sick! Mum and dad came down and we fixed the carport and a few other things. Shells preschool got exceeding on assessment so she’s stoked. Went down to Ulladulla for the long weekend. Freecamped at Kiama blowhole the first night which was beautiful. Found no waves the next day but went to some garage sales and had a nice drive. Had a barbie at Col and Rhonda’s with everyone then got some fun waves at Dolphin point. Had a quiet night at Ray and Jackie’s on the last night then headed home after seeing Joy. We did half of one side of the fence and some other things one weekend then Dumped a lot of fence and green waste on another weekend that I had PD on Saturday. Went on a school camp to Sydney on a Thursday and Friday. Finished the fence and mowed the lawn on the weekend before we headed to Bali!

Bali and South America

Went to Bali! Had a big one with the Krepo’s. Had sick waves at Middles and then had another pretty big one with all the boys in Kuta. Got sick waves at Bingin with John and Krepo then headed over to Lembongan. Had fun waves at Mahana point and a couple at Playgrounds. Had a couple of great dives too and saw a turtle and a Napoleon fish. We then parted ways with the Krepo’s and it was just us in Sanur. I had some good waves at Sanur reef and then sick ones at Hyatt reef. The wind was howling early so we went up to Candi Dasa. Had sick waves at Jasri the first time, surfing right up to the stairs and then walking back out to the jump stairs and striving back into the line up. The next day was a bit small so headed back to Sanur. The wind stayed up so I surfed Airport lefts the next couple of days which was pumping. On the last day I surfed Sanur reef by again. Had a great birthday holiday with my gorgeous wife and some good mates!  Did plenty of surfing and filled in our garage and put up a carport. Went to Gin Gin for Shell’s Reunion Saturday after the big drive up the inland highway. Camped outside Warialda Friday night and saw Clare at Dalby. Her reunion was fun then had lunch with the Perry clan Sunday and then went to Roy’s. Then went to the Beddows’. Had a great time with Kara and Mitch at Airlie beach. Went to the waterfall, fishing on a boat and ate a fish I caught and generally just had a great time with them drinking and stuff. Had a great time with Kate’s mob too, the kids were really cute. Had solid waves at Saltwater yesterday and did an air on the last wave, loving the new board. Stayed in a funky railway hotel at Taree as it was raining Saturday night. Had more solid ones at Emerald with Rob on Saturday after staying at their joint Friday night. Had a couple at cabs then Mullaway that morning and then sick ones that arvo. Had dinner with Kayden and Kerry at the pub Thursday night after lunch with nan and pa. Had fun little ones that day at Mullaway. Had a night to ourselves Wednesday and two good surfs at Mullaway that day. Had dinner with mum and dad and nan and pa on Tuesday night after another two good surfs at Mullaway. Heaps of fun! Went to Byron for Renee and Shaun’s wedding. Had a great night. Camped at Macksville Thursday night and had a couple of drinks. Camped at Byron Friday night then got a hotel at Port Mac Saturday night and went out for a yum Greek feed. Had a few waves at Town beach that arv and Sunday morning. Pretty scary with all the fires around. Went to Krepos 40th and had a ball. Stayed at a nice motel in Nambucca last night. Had some little waves at back Hastings Saturday, Caba Sunday and Shelly beach this morning. Went to Opeth and they went off! Surfed tiny Macmasters Sunday morning after crashing there. We loved it in Cuba! At Playa Giron, drunk as it seems to be the done thing here! I snorkelled today at a Cenote and then we proceeded to make the most of the all you can drink deal that come with the 15 bucks each for admission and food too. What a fantastic tourism model! The snorkelling was pretty good, the food was OK and the booze was plentiful, Shell was on Mojitos and I was on Cuba Libre. We had a quiet night last night in Havana, got refused service, we reckon they thought we were yanks. We then got bakery food, a coupla beers and a bottle of Havana club and downed that in our room. The night before we were in Mexico city for the night and we got drunk at the airport, yes there is a pattern here. Our first night we in LA, we went to the Santa Monica pier and had a nice feed on sunset. We then went back to the hotel, no drinks that time. We were knackered from the flight, I slept most of the long flight from Fiji but the sleeping pills really wiped me this time. The light to Fiji was good, didn’t take long. We’re loving Cuba so far, the old cars are everywhere and we got one from the bus stop here and out to the Cenote. My belly was a bit ordinary yesty after the half cooked hamburger I ate for breaky but I’m all good now after the huge feed of lobster I just had for 10 bucks from the lovely people at our Casa. Our dive in Cuba at Punta Perdiz was great, clean water and undamaged reef. Quite a few fish, a wreck and a cave swim through. We went for a nice walk along the beach that afternoon and had Navidad cena with the owners of our Casa. The next day we went back to La Habana and loooed around old town at the endless supply of old cars and buildings. We then flew to Bogota and the first night we had a few drinks at a few little bars. The next day we went on a bike tour and it was a fun way to see the city. Heaps of street art, funny banter from our guide and we played Terra, a traditional Colombian game that is a little crazy. That night all went down hill when we found an Irish Bar with happy hour jugs and then a nightclub. We partied until the early hours then continued back at our room. Needless to say the next day we slept in and then went to the Monserrate with beautiful views over the city and farmlands over the range. That was our first grog free night! Had a lovely Arabic feed (in Bogota of all places!) and then watched a movie. The last full day in Bogota we went to the Cathedral Del Sal and admired the sculptures and the cute old town on the way there. We had another big last night so we behaved in our ‘King room  with spa’ (for an extra $20 bucks which was hidden in the property details and the AC is crap!) resting our bodies in preparation for New Years Eve in Montanita, which is said to be the party capital of this side of South America! We were a bit sad to leave Colombia and due to not booking we were unable to get a bus overland and missed some things we wanted to see but the local buses take even longer and are said to be unsafe so we’ll be back!

We loved in Huanchaco, Peru! Got there early morning after a hot and sweaty bus ride from Mancora. Had two surfs that were pretty fun then had a few beers and crashed early as we were knackered. Had two surfs again that were fun too then had a few drinks tonight on the balcony at our hotel. Didn’t get to Chicama or Pacasmayo as it was too small for them but that’s cool. Headed to Lima then Cusco, no more waves but lots of adventure ahead! Had some long, fun lefts in Mancora and a few beers the first night but we were really tired so crashed early. It was a harsh, hot and dusty place so we headed here after a couple of days. Had a few beers and another sleep yesterday after a surf. Before Mancora we were at Montañita for New Years and a couple more days. Had a few surfs on the fun rights and lots of partying. NYE we had rums watching the sun go down then had dinner and beers then to a club then back to the beach to ring in the New year. Had a great night then kept partying the next morning. We went out again that night after I surfed and were out til about 5 at another club then the beach. The last night we laid low and got on the luxury bus to Mancora. Having an absolute blast and still have so much great stuff ahead too! It’d been a huge year! China, 40th in Bali, sold our second home, bought our first house, started a new job and now we’re here! We were on the Peru Hop bus to Puno! We spent the morning in Pisac after getting there last night from Ollantaytambo. I went for a walk this morning and took some cool bird photos. We then had a few beers in Cusco and a shower at our hotel. Had a few beers last night and some Sambuca type stuff from here after cruising around the cute old town and market. Walked around Ollantaytambo for a while and took a heap of photos as it is also a pretty little village. We got in late Saturday night after the trip back from Machu Picchu. It was breathtaking. The city itself of course but also the surrounding mountainous landscape and the trip there through different altitudes of farmland was beautiful. The last hour along the shed drops into the Rio Grande was terrifying. We were stoked to get there Friday night and find that we had a nice hotel and we crashed pretty early in preparation for the 4:30 start to be on the mountain for sunrise over the ancient city. We spent the morning there then walked back to get on the bus back to Ollantaytambo. Before Machu Picchu we had a couple of nights in Cusco. It’s a beautiful city, old churches in the square surrounded by the lush green mountains on all sides. The cobblestone streets lined with the bright colours of their traditional arts and crafts. Before Cusco we were in Lima for a night after a long bus ride from Huanchaco. We had a couple of beers on the rooftop of our hotel but didn’t take long to crash. We are loving Peru. In a couple of days we went from surfing on the edge of the desert to flying over the snow capped mountains into lush green patchwork farmland and then into the Sacred valley surrounded by ruins and traditional little villages. We were then looking forward to chilling on this bus for a while and heading back into the desert to experience some of the other wonders of this diverse and vibrant country. I found out that I got accepted into the scholarship so we were pretty stoked about that too and had to celebrate of course! We were back in Lima. Sad to be leaving after a fantastic time in this amazing country. We’re having a few quiet beers at the airport hotel before an early flight back to Mexico City. We stayed in Miraflores on our second last night at a nice hotel but left as they were bashing a wall down from 8am and had no water most of the day. We went for a walk down the beach and had a nice feed before getting on the airport bus. Got in late last night after a great last day on the Peru Hop bus where we went to the Ballestas Islands in the morning and watched hundreds of seals eating some of the thousands of seabirds that were perched on the cliffs or flying around fishing in the rich waters. We then went to the national reserve which was again desert meeting the sea but this time there were also sheer cliffs and apostle like rock formations reminiscent of the Great Ocean Road and a beautiful red sanded beach. We then stopped on the way back to Lima at Casa San Jose, an ornate Spanish Colonial homestead which is now a hotel with a horrific past of slavery and exploitation. The tunnels underneath the foundations were stolen Africans were smuggled and ‘sorted’ were as awful as the stories about their treatment. On our one night in Paracas we had a huge night of drinking and dancing after a fun day of wine and Pisco tasting followed by sandboarding and buzzing around on the juiced up Dune buggies at Huacachina Oasis. The night before that was a quiet one as we got in late after a huge day of travel from Arequipa. On the way we went to the Nazca lines on sunset which was spectacular, we even got some extremely rare drops of rain and watched a rainbow, lighting and thunderstorm over the desert from afar. The night before was another quiet one after an all nighter previously. Shell was booked on for a cooking class which was unfortunately canned due to lack of numbers. I went whitewater rafting which was heaps of fun and then came back to sleep a bit more. We had a few beers in the square the night before and then went to a rooftop club then back to another hostel until the sun came up. That day we’d had a walk around the beautiful old town and caught up on some sleep from the couple of night in a row of overnight buses. In Puno we started on a floating island made of reeds by a people who fled Spanish rule out into the massive Lake Titicaca and built these Islands. We then continued onto Uros Island which has a native culture that predates Incan civilisation and there remains evidence. It is stunning. Reminded me a little of some of the Mediterranean islands we’d been and was so nice to see the simple way the people continue to live and look after their land. So as I said we were sad to be leaving but have a few more days in transit at Mexico City, Los Angeles and particularly Fiji where we planned to do some exploring so it’s not over quite yet! Celebrated Australia Day at home. I had some little waves at Nobby head this arv after mowing the lawn and some other stuff this morning. Stayed at the backpackers again Saturday night and just went to bed after the flight from Fiji. Got there early in the morning and had a swim at the beach and then in the pool and then slept until about lunchtime then had a few drinks before and on the plane. Had some drinks in our hotel at LA then slept in the next day and went for a walk and a feed. Walked around some markets and had some drinks in Mexico City in our funky little hotel. It was a long trip home and pretty cruisy but was good in a way to rest up after such an awesome holiday. We did so many different things but barely scratched the surface of what is on offer in those countries let alone the rest of the continent so we walked away with a renewed vigour to get our selves working and living over there. Most likely in Mexico.

Another house but no more countries for now!

Did plenty of surfing and got stuck into the house. Booked some holidays and went to see Tool which was awesome. Started a master’s degree at uni on a scholarship that gives me permanent job at the end! Booked a holiday to NZ but had to postpone it and our other holidays due to COVID! The virus hurt us in terms of holidays but we got to keep working and get heaps of work done on the house so we weren’t too bummed. I also worked from home quite a bit so that lifestyle allowed me to surf and work on the house a lot. It also made us camp more and travel in Oz which was great too. Had quite a bit of family time too, going home to visit and even looked at some places at home and nearly bought a place at Sandy that came to no avail due to asbestos. Ended up buying another place on the same street in Woodberry, renting it to Helen an old friend of ours while we fix it up. As we haven’t got enough to do here! Before she even moved in we put a new kitchen in, the last of the stuff we got from the demolition in Sydney. Not bad, three grand for 2 kitchens and a bathroom! Plenty of camping going on at Mungo Brush and Forster and a weekend away in the Blue Mountains too. Had a visit from Carl which was cool, had a few beers of course! Built a deck on the back of our place which ended up being another bathroom and room also to the side that we used as a shed with plenty of help from dad. Went to Crescent and had a great weekend as always. We then had a holiday up home after we finally got the bathroom at 28 finished late Friday arv and jumped in the van to start our holiday. Only made it for dinner at Karuah RSL and then had a bottle of wine watching the moon rise over the river and freecamped. Had a beautiful drive up Thunderbolt’s way and then had lunch at the pub. Had a swim in the waterhole and then sat by the fire looking at the trees. Had plenty of waves at home and Forster on the way back too. Had a great time with mum and dad. Nan and pa came over for dinner and we had dinner with Kerry and Beelin. Went to a couple of wineries and did a bit of work in their garden. Started working only three days a week which was great, plenty of time for uni and working on houses. Shell had been saying I should do it. Went for a Sydney weekender around the rocks and loved it. Was getting great marks for uni so I was stoked. At the end of the year we went north. On the way up we Stayed with Luke and G and had fun ones at Broady with him in the morning. We then stayed at Alex head, went out to dinner just us two after a few days with Roy, Roxanne, Aurora and Chris. Had fun waves at Alex head and the back of Pt Cartwright. Had breaky and a coupla beers with Carl in Noosa on the way out. We then went to Agnes for a couple of days. One great free camp at Workman’s and also free one at Yandaran on the way. Had fun waves there and a great bush walk. We then had a great but wet few days over Christmas at Mackay with all my family. We mostly hung at the park but went out looking around and to a pub on the last full day. It was nice and cool too. Next was an awesome camp in Eungella with Playtpus, Bandicoots, Ring tailed Possum and Paddymelons. Then it was Home Hill, free camping and had a feed at the pub. Got there after a snorkel at Bowen through the day. Had an awesome New Years at Magnetic Island, went for a dive that wasn’t great but saw a few fish and had a great snorkel the next day. So it’d been a year like no other, we’d cancelled all overseas holidays indefinitely and not even travelled here much. We got to do a heap of work on our houses that we wouldn’t have normally and seen family a lot more though. We were still hoping that the New Year would bring some more adventures though!

New jobs and new continents

A new job for both of us and a new home and Tawian 2nd time

We moved to our new place at Metford! Had a huge day loading the truck from Woopi, driving down then unloading here. Thankfully Dad helped and drove the truck back. Our place was nice, we think the area is ok and we had air con! I surfed mostly on weekends and sometimes through the week when I had a course in Newy, found waves sometime but it was more crowded of course. Clint and Ayu came to visit with John which was nice. We flew to Adelaide to say goodbye to Raelene which was hard but we were glad we got to do it. We then bought an iMAx van and decked it out as a camper. Very shortly after wards we bought another unit and moved in. It was in East Maitland, just around the corner from Metford. It was a definite fixer-upper but we had time. Went to Mardi Gras and stayed in the van, had a great time! Then went to a metal fest with Marduk, Ulcerate, Gorguts, MGLA and Departe’ and met up with Dan Wendt and met Macca who asked me if I wanted to be in Punched at Birth, of course I said yes! Started doing a bit of camping around the central coast when we got it decked out and we kept improving it over time. Went home and to Roy’s over Easter, camped and surfed of course but as usual spent a lot of time seeing family. Went to Krepo’s wedding in the Goldie and had a great time, snuck in some waves at home before heading back. Started renovating the new joint on weekends and it was looking pretty good, Shell finds some awesome stuff on Gumtree! Had another quick trip home before we went to Taiwan!

Had a quick look at Batu caves while in KL on our way to Taiwan which was cool. Had a couple of tiny surfs, just missed a touch more swell before I got here apparently! Plenty of potential though and had a couple of spectacular rides around checking it out. Kenting night market was fun, we'd walk up and down eat side of the street eating little bits and getting 7/11 beers then found a little pop up bar with cheap spirits to chill for a while. We then went to Xaoluiqui! Got there in a couple of buses and a ferry here from Kenting.  Our luxury hotel was lovely and we got some beautiful sunset photos while eating Takoyaki and drinking Taiwan beer! Had an amazing dive at Houbihu. Saw Nudibranchs, lots of different schools of fish, big coral, a moray eel and it was lovely and clear. It cracked us up, the ute we went to the beach in wouldn't start so we helped push start it and our dive master just left it running while we dived to charge the battery. Shows how honest and trusting they are, was a crappy old thing but still was nice to know. We are home after our awesome holiday. We stayed an extra day at Xiaoluiqui after the first full day there we had 2 great snorkels with heaps of turtles and riding around the island was beautiful. We went to another place for a snorkel on the second day and more turtles! There was some colourful coral too and some pretty fish I hadn't seen before. The staff at the hotel were really helpful too, there was no ATM we could use so they exchanged some cash for us and gave us drinks from their bar! We then went to Taipei on the bullet train which was a buzz. We went to a night market and had some nice food and some drinks. The next day we went to a walk up in the mountains which was nice and a bit cooler. The next day we left for a night in KL on the way home. We got to KL and had a few beers and a feed then got up early to fly home. I dropped Shell off then drove home by about 12. Had an awesome holiday!

Another great South coast trip

Mum and dad came down for a weekend and we went to some wineries which was nice. Went to Dubbo zoo which was great to get away for the weekend, just us. Went camping at Fingal Bay which was nice to get away again, if we stay home we did renos! Shell went to see her sister, neice Aurora, old man and Claire. I then went to Crescent head with mum and dad and got some fun waves. Went to Metal united in Newy and saw some sick bands. The first night of our South coast trip we stayed in the bush in Megalong Valley with a lovely fresh water stream. The next day we went to the Three sisters and Wentworth falls which were both stunning. I had a very cool swim to freshen up.  Had a great time at Jenolan Caves and finally saw a Wombat tonight in Kangaroo valley! Walked around Blue Lake for a while and then went in Nettle cave which was amazing. Then we had a feed with some very friendly Rosella. Last night's spot was great on the side of the road near Jenolan amongst the Daffodils and the Satin Bower birds. No one around so we cranked the tunes and had a blast. We then camped at Werri beach. Got in late after a big and beautiful drive from Jenolan caves. We then headed to the Harbrow's after a surf. Our night with the Harbrow's was great as always, Michael didn't come but Jo and the kids came for a quick visit. After that we had two relaxing nights at Lake Conjola with Beth and I got Green Island pumping. Particularly the second day when it was bigger and less crowded except for the baby Seals swimming around with each other. Fed some fish there to while having a few beers before going to the club. . Spent a couple of lovely nights at Ray and Jackie's and watched the Footy Grand final there, had sick solid waves at the Bommie. Spent a fun night at Demelza's with her and Loretta too. We then camped at Lake Brou national park. Had a fish and a few beers this arv We then stayed at Picnic point which was beautiful. Fed fish again and had a few beers and Shell got some Oysters for me. The next day I had a tiny surf at Tathra while we dried out our smoky fire clothes. On the way to Picnic point we stopped in Narooma to see the Seals and it was awesome. We then went to Eden in a hotel for a bit of luxury. Had our last night at Demelza's again, this time with John home and he's looking pretty good. Before that we had a night at Pretty beach which certainly was with all the Roos around. Got home to a new bathroom and it looks great, Strata covered it so it was a little bonus to a fantastic holiday!

Went to Napalm death and others and it was sick!. Painted our new bathroom and it looks great. Went to Oils and Birds of Tokyo with Mum and Dad. Rode around wineries and camped, had a ball! Got camp fridge, it's awesome. I sunk the pavers and did some van stuff while Shell went to Bitter and Twisted. Went camping at Cams Wharf. Had fun, solid waves at Hams on Saturday. Had a great spot on the Lake for a chilled weekend! Went to the Junkyard and saw a band Friday for Shell’s birthday. Floated around in our boat for a while on and did some housework Sunday. Had some fun waves Tuesday arv .Had some fun waves after my RR graduation. Went to Loretta's for a big one to celebrate Shell's birthday a bit late. Met mum and dad at the markets on the following Sunday. Had a great long weekend at Noosa, Roy's wedding and seeing the Beddows'. No waves but had a swim in our pool then caught up with Carl for a beer. Was great to see the Perry's and our newest nephew Woody! Had a busy end of year with Parties and work at school and home and surfing of course, we were stoked to get out of there to Central America!

Central America

We were on Caye Caulker for Christmas! Got there late after a bus and ferry from Tulum. Met up with some Aussies, Yanks and a crazy Korean dude and had a huge night. Had another delicious dinner and a few drinks and then a great, quiet sleep last night. Cenote diving on our first full day in Carmen del Playa was amazing! We didn't know where to look, it was spectacular in every direction and the Halocline was bizarre, felt a little like you were stuck in it when coming out. That night we had a ball in town and the next day went to stunning ruins in the jungle at Coba and on the beach in Tulum. Then had a lovely dinner of $15 lobster that was huge! We were there for 2 or 3 nights then headed to Belize City to catch a plane to Honduras. We then went to Utila! Had my last 2 amazing dives there on New Year’s Eve. Saw 2 Eagle rays, a Shark sucker and heaps more. Shell gave it a miss because she was crook in the guts. Over all the diving we saw a lot. A huge variety of colourful, hard and soft coral and fish, Giant Moray eels, Hermit crabs and Lobsters and the list goes on. When not diving we've just been sleeping and partying. New year’s was crazy, we started about 5 and went for our 2nd shot challenge and then went to Treetanic which had bridges and tunnels decorated with mosaic and carvings everywhere. We met heaps of great people and didn't want to leave but we have a lot to go and we're excited to get back on the road. After Caye Caulker we had an early night in Belize City. It's supposedly dangerous so we went out early for dinner then veged in front of telly for a while. The next day we were going to museum but it rained so we just went to the airport and had a few drinks while waiting for plane. We arrived in Roatan about nightfall and had a few drinks and another good quiet sleep in a lovely treetop room. The next day we got up and got on the ferry to Utila. Then we headed to Leon, Nicaragua for a night and then to San Juan Del Sur for surfing! Took a Tica bus from Leon, which was much more comfortable than the long shuttles we'd had recently. Went to Las Penidas near Leon, no waves though so we just partied! Bought a nice 2nd hand board and had a coupla fun little surfs at Playa Hermosa near San Juan before that and then saw baby turtles released! Had a few drinks that night before getting in another shuttle the next day back to Leon. From Las Penidas on the Tica bus we got into San Salvador about 2 in the morning and thankfully the hostel owner across from the station let us crash on the lounges for $5 each as he was full. We got a chicken bus to the beach the next day and it was cool! We rushed through a bit because there isn't much swell and we had to get the Tica bus a day earlier than we'd planned. Had fun little waves at le Tunco for a couple of days. Had a few at a bar after watching the sunset with a beer after a surf.

We then went to Antigua! Had a few beers in the beautiful Parque Central and then a few rums at a cute little bar afterwards. We spent the first day in Antigua just cruising around and admiring the charming little city. We had a couple of beers with Joyce at a craft brewery while watching the sunset over a Volcan de Agua. The next day we did the hike. It was incredible, the views on the way up alone were worth it. At our base camp though our tent looked straight out to Volcan de Fuego, the active one. It erupted constantly and as it got dark the colours became more vibrant and we were all mesmerised. Not for long though, we were shagged already and had a 4:00am start for the summit to watch the sunset. It was breathtaking, it felt like another world and the colours radiating off the side of Fuego as the sun began to hit it were stunning. Looking down over the surrounding country was like looking out the window of an aeroplane. Coming back down the summit was heaps of fun too, the quickest and easiest (maybe not the smartest or safest) was to run/jump down. Kind of like walking on the moon, it was so steep that each step was like a long jump and my feet were sinking a foot of so each time into the pebbles. Of course it was the two Aussie blokes at the front of the group, the only ones running and laughing their way down and leaving the rest behind, including the guides. It took us about a third of the time to get back down and we were pretty bloody happy to be on flat ground again but had a once in a lifetime experience to explain the aching legs and shoulders. It was about 5 hours up a predominantly steep incline from 2000m to about 3500m Our tent was on rocks with a 15 mil yoga mat to sleep on so it was a long night, even though we were spent! The summit made the day walk seem fun, it was a constant steep incline for about an hour and a half to the top which just under 4000m. It was also dark, so thankfully Joyce and Shell slept in and Joyce let me use her torch otherwise it would have been dangerous as there were parts where there was just a little path and a sheer drop over the side. The fall might not kill but it would hurt. The run and walk down the summit took about 15 minutes and the walk down from base camp took about 2 hours. It got down to 1 degree overnight so we had to carry a lot of clothes, 4 litres of water and food so we were very glad to get our packs off! We went from the Volcano back to our hostel for a much needed shower then on a shuttle to Lago de Atitlan which was another draw dropping sight. The view from our hotel balcony and room in San Pedro le Laguna was out over the little town at the lake and the Volcanos and mountains looming over it, a little reminiscent of the Fjords in Montenegro, a great spot for a couple of beers and a long sleep! We got on a Lancha (a little ferry across the lake that was as bumpy as the shuttle ride from Antigua) the next day to Panajachel.  Had some beers watching another hypnotic sunset and then went to a bar with a cool band and did some salsa dancing, well Shell did and I did a drunk dance. Stayed at Huatulco for our second night in Pacific Mexico and had a few drinks at a pub. Had a fun surf at Playa de Bocana. Was hard work in the rip though, but it was just me and the pelicans and it's got bags of potential for long hollow lefts. Had a nice hotel there but it was a big resort town and not really the Cantinas on the beach we're after so we went to Zipolite. Our first night was in Tapachula, spent the afternoon/night there to get on a bus at 10:45 pm to Huatulco. It was great to be back in Mexico but it's also getting toward the end of an amazing trip. First surf in Zipolite I had a couple of fun shories, a bit like the wedge when they lined up properly and there were pipefish jumping out of the water and spotted rays swimming around. We then had a few drinks looking at the sunset on the beach. Got good waves the other end too, little barrels bouncing off a rock a bit like Barneys. Went to Ventanilla from there and saw crocs, turtles, Iguanas and heaps of pretty birds. Had a quick look at Mazunte on the way back and saw a cool Vaquero parade. We then went to Puerto Escondido! Had sick waves the first two days here and got heaps of barrels. The last coupla days were too small though unfortunately, still went for a paddle but not getting much. Hired a scooter and went for a look around at other beaches and had a pretty average snorkel at La Punta. Went to a bioluminescent lagoon the other night which was cool. Shell went horse riding and she had fun. Other than that we just been chilled out and lazed about then partied late into the night. Flew from Puerto Escondido to Mexico City for a night before getting on the flight to LA and then home.

Maldives and finally back to Bali!

Went to a play one night in Maitland and put the new doors on the wardrobe in our room that weekend. Went to NeO in Newy and they were awesome again! Went to Thy art is murder with Darcy and they were sick, Justice for the damned and Fit for an autopsy were great too. Got our new fridge and put new kitchen in, big job! Went to IKEA in Sydney one Friday arv to get flooring and benchtops and then stayed in a pub at The Entrance, hoping to get waves on Saturday but it was flat. Was doing a fair bit of surfing, getting a few earlies in too. Went and saw Darcy and his band Splinter play in Newy Saturday and they were sick. Went camping at Barrington Tops and swam in the Gloucester river a few times. Was great to get away from the heat for a while! Had a great Easter at home, everyone but the Beddows were there. Surfed Darkum every day, usually twice with just Dad and Clint and there were fun little shoreys with some pits and ramps. Went out Arrawarra Sunday arv for a muck around with Kara too. Nan and pa and Lisa and Shane came over Saturday night. We had an amazing time in the Maldives! The very first day In Thulusdhoo I had sick waves at Cokes with hardly anyone out, a few barrels and heaps of long waves for hack after hack. It dropped off a bit but the next day I got more sick waves and still not too busy. We had a little snorkel there but it wasn't great. We then went to Himmafushi and the first day I had fun waves to myself at Sultans, a bit lumpy but long waves with some air sections. The next coupla days I surfed Jails which is another long right perfect for smacking. We had a great snorkel there too, coral wasn't the best but heaps of fish and the colour of the water is spectacular. We then moved on to Maafushi and first day we organised a dive and were on the floating bar within half an hour of getting off the boat! The next day our first day was a drift dive and we saw Black tip reef shark, 4 turtles, Nudibranch, Stonefish, Moray eels, Hard stars, Box fish, schools of large and small fish, colourful coral and many varieties of colourful fish. Our second dive was in a Shipwreck, went inside and into an air pocket. Many caverns to swim through. Common Octopus, Many varieties of clam, small Napoleon fish and Nudibranch. We loved it so much we went on a night dive back at the wreck and we saw an Eagle ray, Lobster crab, Mantis shrimp, Lionfish, many different box fish and Soft corals. I had a snorkel on the last day and we went to the floating bar for a last couple again. We didn’t want to leave! We stayed in a lovely hotel in Sydney when we got off the plane and the next night we camped at Gosford. No waves in North Sydney or Central coast though and it was raining and cold so we just came home and I went to Dudley the next day and got a few crappy waves.

Went to footy one night in Newy to watch the bunnies and Knights with Julie’s crew and Beth. Went to Cradle in Sydney with Macca and Bianca it was awesome. I dressed as a nun and Shell crowd surfed. Nan and Pa stayed over for a night and we went to the Bowlo for dinner, was great to see them. Went to Vivid in Sydney and it was fantastic! Bought a newer Lancer and it’s great. Went to Nelsons Bay for the long weekend with Roxanne, Drew and Aurora and Loretta and her family. Had a few little waves Saturday and then it was flat on Sunday. It rained a lot but we had a good time, it was crappy again on Monday so we just headed home. We did the kitchen splashback and painted the ceiling in the kitchen and lounge room. Went to an Escape room with Loretta and Oscar, was heaps of fun. We had a ball in Bali! I had some small, fun waves at Ulus after the mission ride down. Shell, Beth, Kylie and Pix are in Ubud having a quiet one and so am I here. Had some fun, solid waves at Airport lefts yesterday then went out for a big night. Went back to Sanur after a great coupla days at Lembongan. Lacerations was pumping, got the best stand up kegs I’ve had in a long time. The day before we had a coupla fantastic dives, no Mola-Mola but heaps of fish and coral. The first day I just managed to paddle out Shipwrecks on low tide but didn’t even catch one wave, too shallow. I then had to walk back in the sharp reef but luckily fond some old pants so ripped em up to make booties. Some Aussie legends bought me a beer after watching me walk for 25 mins. Before that we were at Sanur and I had some fun solo waves there the day before we went to Lembongan. The day before that I went out Sanur left too low and only got a few as it was too shallow again. Had a big night with the girls in Sanur before they went and then watched Origin the next night l. Had a few small waves at Ulus before heading back to meet Michelle. Mostly just chilled out the Last week at Sanur, mostly because of my stupid head injury. We’d had a great night out dancing and then a nudie swim in the pool and after I got out with wet feet, Shell was having a shower and she heard a crash. She came out and I had blood pouring out my head so off we went to hospital in a taxi. The hospital was great now, not like the cat in the operating room in Balikpapan! Travel insurance paid for some of it but I was spewing that I couldn’t surf anymore. Went to Serangan the day after we got back from Lembongan but the rumours were true. Yes, it is closed for an eco-development by some Singapore based greedy bastards so no-one can surf it! Met up with Lizzy and Constant which was nice and went out to Pabean for a Recon mission, it’s still accessible but it really didn’t seem to be working again so I hope it’s back to its old self next time! Sanur had really turned on too, I’d never seen it that big and long, really fast though. Once again I was wishing I could get out there. Went to the Dentist and got our teeth whitened among other things. Went for another trip back to the hospital and just enjoyed lazing around our nice hotel and doing some shopping and another late night nudie swim. We’re planning not to leave it so long next time!

Our first cruise and half way round Oz trip!

Was surfing a fair bit on weekends and through the week. Bought new furniture to go in our almost finished unit which was looking great. Went to Queens of the Stone Age which was awesome, had a great night. Went to Crescent with Mum and Dad and Clint, Ayu and John. Got some fun ones on Saturday morning before the comp but then the wind came up. Was a bit smaller on Sunday but great shape and Dad and I got heaps of waves. Booked Bali for my 40th next year! Jammed with Black metal band with Bev and Scott, pretty stoked. Ray and Jackie came to visit which we always love. Went to Amber and Chris’ place on our way up the coast in our hols. It looks great and we had a fun night with them and some friends. Watched the footy at Bill’s and had a few. Had some small but fun waves at the Wedge on then the big family thing at the Seaview with Nan, Pa, Lisa, Shane, Lyn, Mum, Dad, Clint, Ayu, John, Anna and Woody. Had a sick surf at Dbah before seeing Davo which was good. Then had some fun waves at Burleigh before seeing Roxanne and Aurora then having a nice quiet night at Caloundra in a hotel. Had some fun little ones at Caloundra river mouth then went out to Belli Creek Park and had a few beers and a fire. Surfed fun ones at Alex Head the next day and then went to Dalby to see Clare and Everley for a couple of nights and then head back to Brisbane yesterday to get on the boat! Had a great first week visiting and surfing.  We loved it on the boat! Got on about 12 the first day and dumped our gear then had some cocktails. Went to a name that tune night and joined a fun team and did pretty well! Had a nice breaky this morning and heaps of good food already. Had a couple of veges through the day, a swim and some drinks then went and saw a jazz band, another name the tune and then went to a comedy show which was a classic. So far we are loving it, heaps of fun and plenty of time to relax too. Now enjoying relaxing, some snorkelling hopefully at Noumea and then waves at Vanuatu! Had an awesome time on the boat, met heaps of great people and had some fun parties and dress ups like Back to School, Blanco and the Gatsby party, played a few more games and another funny comedy. Drank and ate a lot of course and enjoyed chilling out and not moving around heaps. Noumea wasn’t great so we just walked around for a while then got back on the boat but Isle of Pines was beautiful and we snorkelled with cuttlefish which we’d wanted to do for a long time. I had a little surf in Vanuatu at Pango Point and another great snorkel after we went into town for a little while. We’ll probably do another one at some stage as we really enjoyed it, Time to give our bodies a detox! Went to Watagans National Park with Shell on Sunday and it was beautiful. Big mossy rock walls and boulders and a little waterfall. Went for a camp at Watagans and walked to a nice waterfall on Sunday. Got a job at Tarro school for the next year! Going for an early first. Had a lovely weekend for Shell’s birthday. Drove along the northern banks of the Hawkesbury Saturday and then wet over Wiseman’s Ferry and through the Hills back to Brooklyn where we stayed in a cute little Motel with a spa. Had dinner and drinks at the pub and then walked around sightseeing the next day. Had a couple of good surfs at Bar beach through the week too, one I forgot my boardies and had to borrow some off Simon thankfully. Having a bash on Friday night for Shell with Macca and Bev. Booked China for April next year! Had a few parties, Shell’s birthday and Christmas party. Had a jam with Bev and Daryl which was sick.

Our first big stop was Esperance! Got there about 1 after driving across the last bit of the Nullarbor from a free camp amongst some trees just past Cocklebiddy. Had a couple of beers down at the foreshore after driving along the beautiful coast road west of town. Staying at the overflow caravan park and had a few beers at the Pub tonight. Our first night was at Baden Park rest area just before Wilcannia after a day of watching Goats, Roos, Emus, Sheep and birds that were dead, alive or somewhere in between. Our next stop was at the Gums rest area in Kimba, half way across Australia in South Oz, not so much wildlife but a lot of changes in landscape but most of it was really dry. It was pretty exciting seeing the ocean again in Port Augusta and realising that we were getting somewhere! The third day we stopped for coffee at Ceduna and had a huge day of driving looking at a pretty constant but stunning big sky and flat country across the Nullarbor. Had a good last week at work, had a few waves on Thursday morning at Newy beach and then met my new work mates on the last day and said hooroo to my old ones at the pub. Had fun little wedges at Esperance then headed along the coast and ended up at Nanarup in a great free camp on the side of the river. Got bogged the next day though first thing in the morning and Shell got us out! Didn’t find any waves on the way but it’s a beautiful part of the world. Had a quiet night next at another great free camp at Pemberton pools after climbing the Gloucester tree again, which was a bit freaky but worth it. Spent a night at Fremantle in a cute little old B&B and went to the markets and had a great time just walking around and checking it all out. We then went to Margs and I got a few waves at Gas bay. Then we met up with the Junipers and had a ball on the wine tour for dudes and the next day I got some solid 8ft rights at Margs on my little 5’11. After that we had one of our best free camps ever at Smiths beach right on the point and the next day I got some fun waves at Yallingup beach. We had a ball with the Junipers for New year’s eve. We are having such a great time and were looking forward to heading north to start the new year, if it’s anything like this one it’s going to be great again! On New Year’s Day we went to Yanchep and had a chilled night, watched a movie and the next day I got some messy little waves at the spot. Had a great time at Kalbarri. Two fun little surfs at Jakes and then a much appreciated swim at the gorge. We had two nights in an apartment at Geraldton, had the car in for another scan so thought we might be a while. No waves there but we enjoyed lazing about for a couple of days. The night before that we spent at Ellendale pool, no swimming because of poisonous water but it was a hidden treasure amongst the hot and dry farmland. We then free camped on a beach in Shark Bay! We have it to ourselves and it’s beautiful. Falling to sleep to a thunderstorm after feeding some fish and a few beers. Saw Sharks, Rays and Turtles just around the corner and the red dirt and turquoise water views are amazing. After Shark Bay we went to Coral bay and did some snorkelling. The coral has lost most of its colour but there were still plenty of fish. We then went to Exmouth and had one night out on the west side which was beautiful but really hot and windy with heaps of flies! We had a fish in the arv after lazing by the pool. I got up early and had a fish the next day but unfortunately didn’t catch any turtles. I caught a couple of Cod that were too small to keep. We had a look at the lighthouse and the surf, too small again and then I had a snorkel at the wreck and it was great, colourful coral and heaps of fish. The next night we stayed in a hotel in Exmouth to escape the heat for the day and had a quiet night. We got up early the next day and went back to Kalbarri, no waves that arv so we went to the pub for a great feed and a few beers. The next day we got up early but there were no waves so we checked out the rock pools then went out for breaky. I had a snorkel in the arv and then we had a fish while Shell got me oysters off the rocks to eat with our beers. The next day the surf was pumping at Jakes and had a great session before heading off towards Geraldton. Finally got the oil change done in Bunnings car park after the sump plug debacle, never use a shifter or trust a shopkeeper. Told him I was trying to get a stripped bolt out and may be back and then he says: ‘Nah, it’s been used’. Once! Ah well, he missed out on me buying the more expensive spanner and I’m hoping to return it to a different shop. No waves at Geraldton so we headed to Green Head and had a few quiet beers and watched a movie. We then camped at Jurien Bay! Got here around lunch after camping at Green head last night. No waves here but Point Louise at Green Head had solid, windy ones a long way out but no one around to surf with except maybe sharks so I gave it a miss. Lazed around reading this arvo, had a fish from the boat and a few beers. We were past the halfway mark then, Exmouth was as far as we’re going and now we’re heading back slowly but still had great things ahead like Rottnest Friday, Perth Thursday night and then Cactus and Granites on the way back along the Nullarbor. Headed to Matt and Kylie’s! Yanchep had no waves but I got a couple at Trigg in the windy rip, the next morning though was a bit cleaner but ridiculously crowded so I had a swim instead. Left the Juniper’s place early Saturday after an awesome day at Rottnest. Got fun waves at Stricko then had a picturesque ride around the island, great snorkel and of course plenty of Quokkas to play with. We spent a night in a luxury hotel in Perth and went to a hilarious comedy show where we sat right at the front and I got smashed! We spent the afternoon sightseeing which was great. The next day I was chasing up the van stuff, still haven’t solved the engine light issue but it’s going fine. We spent another night with the Junipers and had a few drinks but Shell and I crashed pretty early, we just get in that pattern of having a few and going down with the sun which is great when camping. We then went to Granites, free camping with a beer looking out over the surf after just having some sick waves! Got here this arv after a beautiful night on the Bight watching a family of seals and the most amazing sunset. The night before we camped just outside Norseman on the side of the road and got nailed by bees! Had to drive back to Norseman in the morning thought because luckily we realised we didn’t pay for the fuel the day before! We’ll probably head to Port Augusta next, sad to be going home but still loving it! We stayed in a hotel at Port Augusta as it was so hot. There was no one out at Granites and it wasn’t that great so we headed off early to try and beat the heat. We went to a couple of pubs at Port Augusta and then had a few beers by the pool. Then next day we got to Broken hill and stayed in another hotel to cool off we had a feed at a pub and watched some funny karaoke. We then stayed at Dubbo in another hotel and had some beers by the pool again. Our last night was at Jerry’s plains free camper on the Hunter river, fed some fish again and had a few beers. It was such a great trip, was so glad to revisit some places from last time and some new ones and to share it with Shell. We spent our first day looking at houses to buy and the next started the laundry reno after a fun surf at Bar beach. Pretty excited about maybe buying a house!
